The dial on the silly season is starting to crank its way up. Christmas decorations are coming out, some stores are playing festive music, and people are talking about plans.
It’s also the time of year where everyone feels the squeeze. Especially small business owners, creatives, and entrepreneurs. We’re trying to get everything in before the end of year AS WELL AS prepping for the following. This is why I affectionately call it the stupid season, because things just get a bit crazy.
BUT it is also the time of year that we can make the most of it, especially via our website and SEO strategy.
How and why you ask? Keep reading to see why as a small business you should be blogging about your gift ideas.
Why you should create a blog about gift ideas
If you look at Google Trends on the daily you will see what topics or issues are at the forefront of people’s minds and you can bet your bottom dollar that when certain events or specials dates come around they are popular at certain times of the year.
As an example, for New Zealand in the last 7 days of October this year (2024) the phrase ‘Halloween’ was the most popular search done on Google. With related searches like ‘halloween costume’ or ‘halloween costume ideas’ being right up there. BUT a lot of businesses do not put the effort into creating content pages on their website that cater to these type of searches.
The effort goes into social campaigns or even printed, however they are missing the fact that not only is Google the place people do their research on a product or service there are also 8.5 Billion searches that happen every day (99,000 per second - just for those in the back) - See SemRush eye opening stats for more reasons. So, why not put some effort into your website and make the most of SEO?
Website content can be used over and over
Not only would you be putting your business in the running to be found in the 8.5 Billion searches, your future self will thank you. Because that piece of content you put together (like this blog) will keep on serving. How? Christmas comes every year. People search the same things every year. So, that piece of content is never irrelevant (unless that product or service is no longer available or a way of doing things has improved etc - you get my drift).
That couple of hours spending writing and structuring a piece of web content can turn into years of use with only ever needing maybe a few minutes (at most an hour) giving it some love in the future i.e. keyphrase no longer relevant, dates need to be updated.
It’s not just for Christmas
There are many different seasons and special dates throughout the year that might be applicable for you. You might be a whiskey brand that notices pick up on Saint Paddy’s Day or a flower shop that gets inundated with orders on Mother’s Day, and you want to build on that time.
Think about what content you could create that works in the background, while you are doing the actual heavy lifting in the foreground.
It can help your business be more searchable and reach a larger audience. AND if it’s helpful and informative people (and Google) trust you a little bit more. Because you know what you’re talking about and you care.
What type of content could you create
Blogs are obviously your best bet, but there are also other sneaky things to consider. If you are a podcaster think about a topic that comes up every year around the same time and use that as your talking point for the day, THEN make sure to use SEO on your podcast platform as well as on your website (where your podcast should be connected to) using keyphrases and have drool worthy show notes. This can be referred to on the podcast platform and your website over and over.
And the content doesn’t have to be ‘Top 10 gift ideas’ you could be cheeky ‘Christmas gift ideas that are better than what’s at Kmart’ (in New Zealand we love us some Kmart and was in the top ten related searches around ‘Christmas’). Because not only are you covering yourself for gift ideas you are also giving your website a chance to pop up alongside Kmart too.
It takes time, so start building
Building your websites authority takes time, but it can also happen a lot quicker than what you think.
